From Farm Silo to Countryside Retreat: A Creative Kansas Getaway

Posted on March 4, 2026 By admin

Leaving the busy lanes of Highway 50 and heading toward the small community of Elmdale in Kansas, travelers soon discover a very different rhythm of life. Within about an hour and a half, the landscape opens into rolling farmland, expansive skies, and the quiet beauty of rural countryside. Soybean fields sway with the wind, a narrow creek traces its way through the valley, and the night sky reveals a stunning blanket of stars. Hidden in this peaceful corner of Chase County sits an unusual destination: the Owl’s Nest Silo House, a vacation stay that combines rural charm with inventive architecture.

The story behind this unique property began with a simple idea. In 2019, local builder Gerald Wiens created a handcrafted log cabin intended for occasional weekend rentals. The cozy structure, later known as the Paw Print Cabin, was listed on Airbnb with modest expectations—perhaps a few reservations each month. Instead, growing interest in nature-focused travel soon changed the plan. As more visitors searched for peaceful destinations away from busy cities, the cabin quickly became a popular retreat, welcoming guests for more than 180 nights in a single year.

Not far from the cabin stood an aging farm silo that still had solid structural integrity. Rather than leaving it unused, Wiens imagined a creative transformation. Through sketches, scale models, and multiple design revisions, he began turning the circular structure into a vertical living space. The project presented unique challenges—curved walls and limited floor area required thoughtful planning—but persistence gradually shaped the concept into reality. Today, the 45-foot-tall silo has been reborn as a distinctive four-story escape that blends rustic inspiration with imaginative design.

Inside the silo house, the ground floor welcomes guests into a circular living area designed for relaxation and conversation. Comfortable seating, a television, and a stone-framed gas fireplace create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A compact half bathroom is cleverly positioned beneath the staircase, maximizing every inch of space. From there, a spiral staircase climbs upward through the structure, eventually reaching a quiet bedroom at the top level where guests can enjoy elevated countryside views. For Wiens, the project represents years of creativity and dedication—while for visitors, it offers a memorable stay that captures the calm beauty of the Kansas landscape.
