Before heading out on vacation, most people focus on the big tasks—locking doors, unplugging electronics, and turning off the water. One small detail often gets missed: the kitchen and bathroom sinks. When left unattended, drains can become a source of unpleasant smells, excess moisture, or even unwanted insects, quietly affecting your home while you’re away.
When plumbing isn’t used for days or weeks, the water in the drain trap can slowly evaporate, especially in warm weather. This creates an opening for sewer gases to rise into the home, bringing musty odors with them. The same dry pathway can also allow insects to travel up through the pipes, turning an empty house into an easy target for pests looking for shelter.
A surprisingly effective solution requires no tools or special products. Simply place a paper towel over the drain opening and set an upside-down glass on top. This creates a physical barrier that helps block odors, moisture, and insects. Unlike sink stoppers, which can loosen or lose their seal over time, a glass stays in place and doesn’t rely on suction to work.
For best results, take a few minutes to prepare the sink before you leave. Clean it thoroughly, pour hot white vinegar down the drain to break down residue, and rinse with warm water after it sits for a while. A quick wipe with lemon adds freshness. Once the sink is dry, cover the drain with a paper towel and the glass. It’s a small habit, but it can make a noticeable difference—ensuring you return from vacation to a home that smells clean, feels calm, and welcomes you back comfortably.
