Why Travel Experts Say Ribbons on Luggage Can Cause More Harm Than Help

Posted on February 12, 2026 By admin No Comments on Why Travel Experts Say Ribbons on Luggage Can Cause More Harm Than Help

Air travel often inspires small habits that make passengers feel organized and prepared. One of the most common is tying a bright ribbon or strip of fabric to a suitcase handle to make it easier to spot at baggage claim. At first glance, the idea seems practical: add color, avoid confusion, save time. Many travelers pass this tip along confidently, believing it reduces stress after landing. However, industry professionals suggest that this well-intentioned trick may create complications behind the scenes.

Modern baggage systems rely heavily on automation. From check-in to aircraft loading, suitcases move through high-speed conveyor networks where barcode scanners read routing information in fractions of a second. These scanners depend on clear visibility of the airline tag attached to each bag. When loose ribbons or fabric swing over the barcode—even briefly—the scan can fail. When that happens, the suitcase is diverted off the automated line and sent for manual handling, which increases the likelihood of delay compared to bags that move smoothly through the system.

There is also a mechanical consideration. Conveyor belts include rollers, turns, and moving components designed for streamlined luggage. Loose decorative items can catch or snag, potentially causing minor jams or damage to the bag itself. In some cases, security personnel may remove accessories that interfere with screening procedures. Ironically, the ribbon intended to make identification easier may not even survive the journey—or may no longer be unique if many passengers adopt the same idea.

Travel professionals often recommend alternatives that work with airport systems rather than against them. Choosing luggage in a distinctive color or pattern is one reliable option. Properly fitted luggage covers that leave barcode tags visible can also help. Removing old airline tags and ensuring current labels are unobstructed supports smooth scanning. For added reassurance, some travelers place a tracking device inside their suitcase. Understanding how baggage systems operate allows passengers to make informed choices that reduce delays and help luggage arrive safely and efficiently.
