Swollen Feet in Older Adults: Simple Daily Habits That Can Help Reduce Discomfort

Swollen feet and ankles are a common concern as people grow older, often making everyday activities less comfortable. While temporary swelling after sitting or standing for long periods is usually not unusual, persistent or recurring swelling may indicate that the body is retaining excess fluid, a condition known as edema. Understanding the possible causes and adopting healthy daily habits can help support mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life. If swelling is severe, sudden, or accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, medical attention should be sought promptly.

One of the most frequent reasons for swollen feet is reduced circulation, which can become more noticeable with age. When blood and other fluids do not move efficiently through the legs, they may collect around the ankles and feet, leading to puffiness and discomfort. Spending long hours sitting, standing, or remaining inactive can make this problem more pronounced. In some cases, chronic venous insufficiency—a condition in which leg veins have difficulty returning blood to the heart—may also contribute to ongoing swelling and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Other factors can also play a role. Certain prescription medications, including some used to treat high blood pressure or inflammation, may cause fluid retention as a side effect. Swollen feet may also be associated with underlying health conditions involving the heart, kidneys, or liver, making it important not to ignore persistent symptoms. Lifestyle habits matter as well, as a diet high in sodium, inadequate physical activity, and prolonged inactivity can all increase the likelihood of fluid buildup in the lower legs.

Fortunately, many people can support healthy circulation with simple everyday choices. Taking regular walks, changing position frequently throughout the day, elevating the legs during periods of rest, and wearing supportive footwear may help reduce swelling. Compression socks may also be recommended for some individuals after consulting a healthcare provider. In addition, eating a balanced diet with moderate sodium intake, staying well hydrated, and maintaining an active lifestyle can contribute to healthier fluid balance. Combined with routine medical care when needed, these practical habits can help older adults keep their feet more comfortable and support long-term wellness.
