A Simple Kitchen Trick to Reduce Moisture Inside Your Car

Posted on March 11, 2026 By admin

Opening your car door only to find foggy windows and a damp smell can be frustrating, especially in older vehicles or during colder seasons. Moisture tends to accumulate inside cars due to temperature changes, wet clothing, or small gaps in seals. When humidity builds up, it can leave windows cloudy and create an uncomfortable environment inside the vehicle. Fortunately, there is a simple and affordable way to help manage excess moisture using an everyday household ingredient.

One surprisingly effective option is plain table salt. Salt naturally absorbs humidity from the air, a property known as hygroscopic behavior. Because of this, it can help draw excess moisture away from the interior of your car. By reducing humidity, salt may help prevent window fogging and limit the damp conditions that often lead to unpleasant odors.

Using this method is quick and easy. Start by placing a small bowl, jar, or breathable container filled with dry table salt somewhere stable inside the car, such as in a cup holder, on the dashboard, or beneath a seat. Leave it there so it can gradually absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Over time, the salt may clump together as it collects humidity—this simply indicates it is doing its job. When that happens, replace it with fresh salt to keep the process effective.

Keeping moisture levels lower inside your vehicle can also help discourage the growth of mold or mildew that sometimes develops in damp environments. This small step may improve the overall air quality and comfort of your car, particularly if it is parked outdoors or not used frequently. Simple, practical habits like this can make everyday driving more pleasant while helping protect your vehicle’s interior.
